The Hearth Lounge

Welcome to The Hearth Lounge

A fireside retreat within Velvet Hearth Casino, where the glow of the hearth meets the hush of intimate conversation. Located on the ground floor of the hotel at 101 Collins Street, the lounge is open evenings from 5pm until late.

No reservation is required for the lounge, though private salons can be booked.

The Atmosphere

A Room Designed for Conversation

The lounge is furnished with deep velvet armchairs and low walnut tables, arranged to encourage quiet conversation rather than loud gatherings. Seating is placed in small clusters around the central fireplace, so every corner of the room feels connected to the hearth without feeling crowded.

Lighting is warm and low, with table lamps and candlelight rather than bright overhead fixtures. The room is acoustically softened with heavy drapes and upholstered panels, which helps keep voices at a comfortable murmur and makes the lounge feel like a private sitting room rather than a public bar.

The Hearth as a Focal Point

A working fireplace provides both warmth and a visual anchor, its glow reflecting off polished brass and dark timber. The fireplace is lit during cooler months and evenings, and it is positioned to be visible from most seating areas, giving the lounge a steady, reassuring centre.

Drinks and Small Plates

Cocktails and Classics

The lounge offers a curated list of classic cocktails, Australian wines, and a small selection of whiskies and digestifs. Signature cocktails include the Velvet Hearth Old Fashioned and a spiced rum negroni. Wines are predominantly Victorian, with a few interstate and international options. Non-alcoholic options include house-made sodas and seasonal spritzes.

Velvet Hearth Old Fashioned

Bourbon, house bitters, burnt orange, and a whisper of smoked sugar.

Spiced Rum Negroni

Spiced rum, sweet vermouth, and Campari with a clove-studded orange twist.

House-Made Sodas

Seasonal fruit, herb, and spice sodas for a refreshing non-alcoholic option.

Small Plates to Share

A concise menu of small plates is available, designed to complement the drinks and not overshadow conversation. Offerings include charcuterie, cheese boards, and warm olives. Plates are served on walnut boards with brass accents. The kitchen closes at 11pm, but drinks continue until late.

  • Charcuterie with cured meats, pickles, and seeded crackers
  • Cheese board with local and imported cheeses, quince paste, and lavosh
  • Warm olives with citrus zest and rosemary
  • Seasonal small plates that change with the kitchen's evening selection

The Lounge Experience

From Arrival to Last Call

Guests are welcomed at the lounge entrance and invited to choose a seat near the fire or in a quieter corner. Service is attentive but unhurried, with a host offering a drinks list and recommendations for pairings. The lounge is designed for stays of one to three hours, whether you are pausing before dinner or settling in for a longer conversation.

5pm

Doors open and the first candles are lit. Early evening is ideal for a quiet drink before dinner.

8pm

Live piano music begins on Friday and Saturday evenings, adding a gentle backdrop to conversation.

11pm

The kitchen closes, but the bar continues serving drinks until late.

Dress and Etiquette

The lounge maintains a smart-casual dress code. Guests are asked to keep conversations at a considerate volume, and mobile phones should be set to silent. Smart-casual means collared shirts, neat denim, and closed shoes for men; equivalent for women. No sportswear, thongs, or singlets.

Private Salons

Intimate Spaces for Small Groups

Two private salons adjoin the lounge and can be reserved for groups of six to twelve guests. Salons offer the same drinks and small plates menu, and each salon has its own fireplace or hearth feature. Bookings can be made via the hotel concierge or by phone.
